COMMISSIONING RESULTS - ACTIVATED SLUDGE TREATMENT PLANT VIACHA CASE STUDY
Keywords:
activated sludge, wastewater treatment, organic matter removalAbstract
The Viacha Wastewater Treatment Plant implemented an activated sludge system with oxidation ditches aerated by rotating brushes and a secondary clarifier, achieving significant organic matter removal. During four months of operation, parameters such as pH (7.56-8.46), conductivity (800-1200 μS/cm), and dissolved oxygen (2.5-3.8 mg/L) were monitored, with an average influent flow of 2.6 L/s. Results showed removal efficiencies of 80.8% for COD and 97.5% for BOD₅, reaching effluent values of 64.8 mg/L and 7.0 mg/L respectively in the clarifier. The BOD₅ concentration in the oxidation ditch was 71.0 mg/L, while the system operated with a 5-day hydraulic retention time to achieve 91.2% COD removal. Aeration with rotating brushes (2 hours operation/1 hour rest) proved effective, though requiring adjustments to maintain optimal dissolved oxygen levels. These results confirm the system's good performance in treating domestic wastewater, highlighting its ability to significantly reduce organic load under controlled operational conditions.
