In Sucre, on September 8, 1888 and during the feast of the Virgin of Guadalupe that would be celebrated with a mass in the cathedral, a rebellion was carried out by members of the “Loa” Battalion, with the firm intention of assassinating the president., Mr. Aniceto Arce, who had won the elections months before with the National Party. The reason for this violent action was that the Liberal Party, led by General Eliodoro Camacho, had lost the elections for the second consecutive time, where it denounced alteration of results, vote buying and interference by the Executive Branch. The assassination did not take place, but the attempt to do so resulted in terrible bloodshed in the Capital.
