Abstract

SUMMARY

PROBLEM: What is the level of knowledge about the use of contraceptive methods among 5th and 6th-year high school students at Hernando Siles School in the municipality of Villa Vaca Guzmán, January-March, 2017?

OBJECTIVE: To determine the level of knowled- ge about the use of contraceptive methods among 5th and 6th-year high school students at Hernando Siles School in the municipality of Villa Vaca Guz- mán, January-March, 2017.

MATERIAL AND METHODS: It is a quantitative study with an observational, descriptive approach and cross-sectional time frame. The population consisted of 101 students, of which 94 students participated and 7 were absent for various reasons. A questionnaire of 12 questions was administered with a score ranging from 0 to 10 points, classified into 3 levels: low, medium, and high.

RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: According to the conducted study, there is a high awareness regar- ding the use of contraceptive methods at 94%, and a lack of knowledge associated with the characte- ristics of contraceptive methods at 51%. According to the source of information, students prefer heal- thcare personnel at 23% and acquiring it at school at 30%.

Regarding the onset of active sexual relationships, 22% started between the ages of 15 and 16, and 10% started between the ages of 13 and 14. Addi- tionally, 48% of students do not use any contracep- tive method, while 43% use condoms as their con- traceptive method, making it the most well-known and preferred. Of the respondents who did not use any contraceptive method, it is indeterminate whether they have not started a sexual life or are unaware of them, followed by the difficult access to contraceptive methods at 23%.
