Abstract

Cauda equina syndrome (CES) is a
rare but serious condition caused by
obstruction of the nerve roots in the
lower spine, usually due to a herniated
disc. Other potential causes include
infections, vascular abnormalities or spinal
interventions and it is most prevalent in
women and individuals aged 30-49 years.
Typical symptoms include severe low back
pain, decreased strength and sensitivity in
the lower limbs, and abnormalities in the
urinary or intestinal system. The primary
diagnostic method for detecting this
condition is magnetic resonance imaging,
for early intervention. We present the case
of a 33-year-old man who presented with
severe low back pain that spread to the
lower limbs and caused paresthesias in the
perianal region. Initially, pain management
involved the application of etoricoxib and
tramadol, followed by immediate referral
to a spinal surgery for evaluation and
therapy.
