EDITORIAL
Las revistas científicas constituyen actualmente el medio privilegiado de transmisión de los
conocimientos generados por las ciencias . La revolución científica sentó las bases para que se instituyera
un sistema escrito y además público donde los académicos, y cientistas pudieran comunicarse y las
publicaciones periódicas dieron la respuesta a esa necesidad constituyendo el sustrato que más tarde
permitiría visualizar a la ciencia como una institución social, susceptible de ser indagada y además
evaluada. En la actualidad, las revistas científicas obedecen a una gran cantidad de criterios para ser
clasificadas; las revistas de carácter académico, con sistemas de referenciación y sometidas a comités
editoriales internacionales, de gran cobertura de suscripción e indexadas en significativas bases de datos,
son las elegidas para difundir artículos originales primarios que contienen los últimos avances científicos.
Las publicaciones periódicas en latinoamerica, sobretodo aquellas que son editadas en soporte de papel,
constituyen cada vez un universo científico con menor presencia en bases de datos internacionales,
bibliotecas y centros documentales, a pesar de la relevancia que puedan tener los artículos científicos que
difunden. Mantener en circulación una revista científica puede ser una tarea titánica, la necesidad sentida
de construir un patrimonio intelectual propio de la región, que constituya una muestra del aporte de su
comunidad de investigadores, debe constituir un mandato para enfrentar cualquier desafío que imponga
el complejo proceso editorial de comunicar la ciencia. Por lo anterior, el poner en circulación revistas
científicas es una decisión de alta responsabilidad que solo podrá ser evaluada en cuanto a su pertinencia,
con el paso de los años y a través de la demostración de que su sostenibilidad sí es posible.
En la actualidad, se imponen cada vez con mayor frecuencia airadas críticas respecto a los indicadores de
impacto de las publicaciones científicas periódicas, esto ha motivado la consolidación de iniciativas
regionales muy importantes como Latindex y Scielo, De cuyos catálogos forma parte la revista aspirando
a ser indexada en breve ya que estas no sólo se encuentran orientadas a mejorar los actuales indicadores
cuantitativos vigentes para evaluar la ciencia de la región, sino y más importante aún, a mejorar la
interpretación que se haga de ellos, con consideración de las diferencias que existen entre las diferentes
revistas, los diferentes idiomas en que son editadas y las necesidades de desarrollo que tiene cada
disciplina. Las expectativas que tenga cada editor y cada autor tengan de su productividad, visibilidad y
reconocimiento deben ser acordes al avance de la disciplina objeto de la revista, en este caso, de la salud y
privilegiar a su comunidad académico científica directa, con los resultados originales de sus
investigaciones y en revistas de reconocido prestigio que estén a su alcance.
El directorio de Bio Scientia considera que el verdadero aporte científico es aquel cuyos resultados
motivan al debate científico, inducen a nuevos problemas y se aplican para mejorar la calidad de vida de
la población sin otra recompensa más que el hacer avanzar la ciencia que justifica su quehacer
disciplinario.
